Conjoint Statement by eurammon and the IIAR

Committed to natural refrigerants for the sake of sustainable, energy-efficient refrigeration and air-conditioning technology

Joint statement by eurammon, the European initiative for natural refrigerants, and the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR)

Given the global efforts being made to protect the climate, interest is increasingly focused on natural refrigerants, which have been used successfully in refrigeration technology for more than 100 years. eurammon, the European initiative for natural refrigerants, and the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) bring leading global players from the refrigeration sector together with individuals and institutions in the field of natural refrigerants. Mutual cooperation and memberships have resulted in global networking with international associations and institutions. As centres of excellence for the use of natural refrigerants, the organisations are strengthened by the strong personal commitment of their members. Together, they develop innovative, future-viable solutions for refrigeration technology and forge ahead with respective implementation.

eurammon and the IIAR are committed to promoting worldwide acceptance and increased use of ammonia, carbon dioxide and other natural refrigerants. They assume social responsibility on behalf of an ecological industrial policy, support sustainable refrigeration technology management and the use of energy-efficient systems. Natural refrigerants have no ozone depletion potential and either no (ammonia) or only a negligible global warming potential. Their use also pays off in financial terms. The refrigerants are low-priced and readily available in large quantities. Their high efficiency has a positive impact on the operating costs of the systems in which they are used. This includes low-cost disposal of natural refrigerants at the end of a machine's service life.

eurammon and the IIAR pursue extensive know-how transfer regarding the properties and possible applications for natural refrigerants. As information platforms, they support users, consulting firms and manufacturers as well as representatives from business and politics, providing extensive information material, training courses and advice.

Solutions with natural refrigerants have proven to be environment-friendly, economical and efficient. Among other applications, they are used for refrigeration and air-conditioning in buildings, in the food industry, in sport and leisure facilities, in the chemical-pharmaceutical industry and in the automotive sector.

About eurammon

eurammon is a joint European initiative of companies, institutions and individuals who advocate an increased use of natural refrigerants. As a knowledge pool for the use of natural refrigerants in refrigeration engineering, the initiative sees as its mandate the creation of a platform for information sharing and the promotion of public awareness and acceptance of natural refrigerants. The objective is to promote the use of natural refrigerants in the interest of a healthy environment, and thereby encourage a sustainable approach in refrigeration engineering. eurammon provides comprehensive information about all aspects of natural refrigerants to experts, politicians and the public at large. It serves as a qualified contact for anyone interested in the subject. Users and designers of refrigeration projects can turn to eurammon for specific project experience and extensive information, as well as for advice on all matters of planning, licensing and operating refrigeration plants. The initiative was set up in 1996 and is open to European companies and institutions with a vested interest in natural refrigerants, as well as to individuals e.g. scientists and researchers.

About the IIAR

The International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) was formed in 1971 to serve those who use industrial refrigeration technology through education and advocacy.  These core values continue to inform and guide the mission of IIAR in the 21st century.

IIAR is a world-wide organizations that promotes the safe use of ammonia, carbon dioxide, and other natural refrigerants through education, information, and standards.  Our membership of more than 1,900 includes industrial refrigeration end users, many of whom are large multinational food processing companies, beverage producers and cold storage warehouse operators.  Our membership also includes ammonia refrigeration contractors, engineers, component manufacturers, suppliers and academics.

IIAR is also a technical resource for the industry.  Each year, more than 1,000 people from around the world attend the annual IIAR Industrial Refrigeration Conference & Exhibition.  IIAR publications focus on regulatory compliance, training, system design standards, piping guidelines and operating and maintenance guidelines.  The IIAR website, www.iiar.org, also houses the largest on-line technical library containing more than 450 technical papers and publications that are available to IIAR members.
